Ich geh' mit meiner Laterne [St. Martin's Day]

[On November 11th, children in Germany celebrate St. Martin's Day by walking through the streets in lantern parades and singing traditional songs, remembering the legend of St. Martin of Tours, a roman soldier and later on bishop in the 4th century. The legend says one cold winter night, riding on his horse on the way back to his troups, St. Martin came across a poor man who was about to freeze to death. Nobody seemed to care. Having nothing but his sword and his cloak, he cut the cloak in two and gave one piece to the poor man.]

[For me, there are a lot of treasured memories to this tradition, and therefore, I want to pass a glimpse of that on to my own children. Luckily, there is a German teacher who organizes such a lantern parade at a park in Pflugerville. Julius and Vivian really enjoyed making their lanterns with Oma and Opa. And tonight at the parade, there was even a frosty breeze, after a cold front had come in. It felt a little bit like home.]

Vivian und Julius Hand in Hand.

Vivian macht beim Martinslied mit:

Ich geh mit meiner Laterne
und meine Laterne mit mir.
Dort oben leuchten die Sterne,
hier unten leuchten wir.

[I'm walking with my lantern,
my lantern goes with me.
The stars are shining above us,
down here the light are we.]
